Avantium is a leading Research & Technology company, specialized in advanced catalytic R&D, active in the chemical and cleantech markets. Avantium has a track record of successfully discovering, developing and optimizing catalytic processes for the refinery and chemical industries. Using its proprietary catalyst development technology, Avantium is capable of accomplishing innovations with superior success rate and speed. Avantium has demonstrated the validity and commercial viability of its technology by successfully providing research services and systems to more than seventy companies worldwide, including many industry leaders.

Building on its advanced catalyst research technology and industry experience, Avantium has developed its YXY (pronounced: icksy) technology, a proprietary process to convert carbohydrates into green building blocks for making bio-based plastics, bio-based chemicals and advanced biofuels. YXY provides an alternative, renewable feedstock to fossil resources for the production of bottles, clothing, carpets, fuels and a wide variety of plastics. Avantium’s lead product is PEF, a 100% bio-based polyester with advantageous properties over petroleum-based PET.

Avantium’s strategy is to bring its development programs to commercial scale and exploit the value of its patented YXY technology by securing partnerships during the coming years. Current partnerships have been signed with The Coca-Cola Company, Danone, Solvay, Rhodia and Tejin, demonstrating the potential of its new generation of renewable materials, such as PEF.

Avantium constructed a pilot plant at Chemelot Campus in Sittard-Geleen, the Netherlands, which is operational since 2011. The ambition is to build and operate its first commercial plant in 2015. The company’s headquarters and laboratories are located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Avantium is backed by an international group of investors, including Sofinnova Partners, Capricorn Cleantech, Aescap and ING.

Avantium has been listed for the second consecutive year in the Cleantech Group’s prestigious Global Cleantech 100. It was also shortlisted for the 2012 Red Herring Top 100 Europe Award for most promising private technology venture.
